Brand Voice or Coping Mechanism?

by Aliya Banks | Founder of Digital Drip by Aliya

There’s a version of your brand voice that didn’t come from strategy.
It came from survival.

It sounds polished. Thoughtful. Safe. It says the right things… without ever really saying anything.

I know this voice well, because I’ve written from it.

There was a time when I needed my words to protect me more than represent me, when I was building something without proof, without traction or certainty, with a belief and a willingness to keep going.

So I wrote copy that would get me in the room, not copy that revealed me. And for a while, that works. But eventually, something starts to feel off.

You read your own About page and feel disconnected. You describe what you do, but it doesn’t quite land. People understand you, but they don’t see you.

That’s not a branding problem. It’s a translation problem.

Because your voice has evolved…and your language hasn’t caught up yet. There’s a gap between who you’ve become and how you’re still describing yourself.

Most people try to fix this by rewriting or, even worse, using AI.

But rewriting doesn’t work when the issue isn’t the words, it’s the version of you those words were written for.

At some point, the question shifts from:

“How do I sound clearer?” to

“Am I still speaking from a version of myself I’ve already outgrown?”

That’s where real brand voice work begins.

If this resonates, I created something specifically for this moment.

My signature offer, the Voice Translation Session—a 90-minute working session where we find language that actually reflects who you are now, not who you had to be to get here.

You don’t need to reinvent yourself. You just need to find the words for who you are, now.

What do your words say about you and the business you’ve worked so hard for?
